27-3-003 The Sun Enemy target red cross on ambulances;Iraq War II By Gethin Chamberlain AMBULANCE drivers told how they came under fire from enemy troops who used their RED CROSSES as targets. Two of the bullet-scarred armoured vehicles arrived in Az Zubayr to help with the humanitarian relief effort. One was hit five times as they went to the aid of British troops whose transport had been damaged in a rocket-propelled grenade attack. Corporal Donald McClurg, 32, of Dumfries, said: "We were under RPG fire going through the whole town. "I looked around to see a grenade go straight past me, then another one went past. "I put my head down then and used my periscope and told my driver to get her head down." His vehicle was struck near the centre of the red cross on its side. Another bullet hit the name "Rosie" surrounded with painted flowers, the name he plans to give his new baby. His wife was due last Thursday but he had still not heard.
